With an educational background in dance, visual media, and sociology, I aim to develop as a filmmaker and visual artist, constantly exploring the intersections of aesthetic art forms, movement and social issues. Alongside this, I devote time to a variety of art disciplines such as photography, creative writing, and music, blending them into my work or drawing inspiration from them.
ABOUT.
Hi! I am Gemma Rijnders (1997), a video editor, dancer, and independent filmmaker based in Amsterdam. My ambition is to create art that I would describe as warm, poetic, and dynamic, to connect with a magical gaze on everyday life.
During my teenage years, I pursued classical dance training at the National Ballet Academy in Amsterdam (2007-2015). Throughout this period, I acquired physical training but also developed a sensitivity to music, rhythm and dynamics.
After the academy, I studied Image and Media Technology at the Utrecht School for the Arts, learning to think beyond the boundaries of classical art forms. I graduated with the short dance film Tournant, which premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival.
Seeking a deeper understanding of the world and society for my future work as a visual artist, I decided to study sociology at the University of Amsterdam. There, I obtained my Master of Science with a thesis exploring the role of women in film from a feminist perspective.
